CAP GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) – Demolition work on a 170 year old Irish handball court in Cape Girardeau has started.

The tribunal can be 170 years old old, and currently sits adjacent to the River Campus of Southeast Missouri State University.

The old handball field is part of the old Saint-Vincent college founded in 1843.

It is believed to be one of the oldest handball courts in the United States, and possibly the oldest in the United States.

Southeast Missouri State University has requested a structural assessment of the handball court.

The Lawrence Group said the wall had a number of structural deficiencies.

There were a lot of cracks and holes in the wall.

The Southeast plans to expand the School of Visual and Performing Arts on the River Campus and build a new residence.

According to the structural assessment group, there may be an effort in the future to save part of the old structure and have an exhibit in one of the new buildings on the River Campus site.

Nip Kelly Equipment and Milam Masonry and Contracting are working together to clear the land.

A Nip Kelly manager says it will be a process that will take several days.

They started on Tuesday and have already removed the top.

They destroy it by brick at a time.

They also have several assigned bricks to be kept.
